12/21/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Philadelphia Flyers will attempt to post back-to-back wins in New Jersey for the first time since the 2001-02 season, as they visit the Devils today at the Prudential Center.
The Flyers and Devils began their six-game season series on October 24 in New Jersey, with Philadelphia notching a 6-3 victory to halt a 12-game road series losing streak (0-9-3). The clubs have since met twice in Philadelphia and split those two contests, with both games going into overtime.
Philadelphia hasn't won two straight trips to New Jersey since it followed a 3-1 victory on November 17, 2001 with a 1-0 triumph on February 27, 2002.
The Flyers have won six of their last seven games and are coming off a 7-1 rout of the Washington Capitals. Scott Hartnell had his second hat trick in five games, while Jeff Carter added two goals and two assists to move into a tie with Buffalo's Thomas Vanek for the most goals in the NHL this season with 24. Joffrey Lupul added a goal and three assists while Simon Gagne also lit the lamp.
However, the star of the game for the Flyers was netminder Antero Niittymaki. Making his third straight start with No. 1 goaltender Martin Biron (flu), Niittymaki made 47 saves, including 25 in the first period alone. He also stopped all 12 shots unleashed by Washington's Alexander Ovechkin.
The victory was Niittymaki's sixth in his last seven starts and he could go again today with Biron still battling his illness.
The Flyers are now four games back of the first-place New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division. The Devils are also in the hunt, as they are three points back of second-place Philadelphia.
Beginning tonight, Philly will play seven of its next eight on the road, as they begin a six-game road trip following Tuesday's home game versus the Senators. The Flyers are 7-4-3 on the road this season.
The Devils have won two straight and began a four-game homestand with a 5-1 victory over Ottawa on Friday. Patrik Elias scored a pair of goals and added two assists, while Zach Parise notched his second four-assist game in his last five contests.
Parise leads the Devils with 18 goals and 39 points and is now tied with Elias for the club high in assists with 21. Elias, meanwhile, has an outstanding 16 points (7 goals, 9 assists) over a nine-game point streak and 11 goals and 16 assists over his last 15 games.
Johnny Oduya, Travis Zajac and Brian Gionta each scored once for the Devils, while Scott Clemmensen stopped 24-of-25 shots in the win.
The victory improved the Devils to 10-5-1 at home, where they have won six of their last seven. New Jersey will host Boston on Tuesday and Pittsburgh on Friday.
New Jersey has won seven of its last 10 overall versus Philadelphia.
